The Cape Verdean Committee for Sports for the Handicapped (CCD) will hold the 2nd National Paralympic Sports Championship between July 25 and August 1. Some 70 athletes with visual, auditory and motor deficiencies are scheduled to compete in various different modalities, including racing, lance throwing, volleyball and weight lifting. The championship is part of a series of activities that began to be carried out Wednesday afternoon. The CCD hopes to promote athletic exchange among handicapped athletes as a way of integrating them in society. Athletes hailing from the islands of Santiago, Maio, Fogo, Santo Antão, Brava, São Nicolau, Boa Vista and São Vicente and slated to participate in the competitions. Those who stand out most will be chosen to represent Cape Verde in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and in other international competitions. The CCD also signed two cooperation protocols on Wednesday, one with LG Electronics and the other with the National Orthopedics and Functional Rehabilitation Center. Asemana |
