The Observer ranks Mayra Andrade’s “Navega” as one of 50 best CDs of 2007 PDF Print E-mail

The album Navega by Cape Verdean singer Mayra Andrade was considered one of the 50 best CDs of 2007 by British newspaper The Observer. The singer’s debut album is the only one on the list hailing from a Portuguese-speaking country

Navega, which was ranked twenty-second on the list, came in ahead of a number of albums by world-renowned artists, including Bruce Springsteen’s Magic, Kayne West’s Graduation, Bjork’s Volta, Paul McCartney’s Memory Almost Full and Britney Spears’ Blackout.

Journalist Charlie Gillet, who specializes in World Music, writes that “We make things tough for singers whose first language is not English, expecting them not simply to make exceptional music but to look remarkable, explain the meaning of their songs and beguile journalists. Mayra Andrade passed all the tests.”

Gillet also says that Mayra’s timbre is reminiscent of Norah Jones or Bebel Gilberto, but that her songs are “more varied and daring.”
